Location
Giudecca Island, behind the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer (Il Redentore), Venice
Description
In Venetia Hortus Redemptoris is a restored monastic garden hidden behind the monumental Church of the Redeemer on Giudecca. Reopened to the public after a meticulous botanical and architectural restoration led by the Venice Gardens Foundation, this historic hortus conventualis had remained closed for over four centuries.
Spanning nearly one hectare, the garden blends spirituality, landscape design and biodiversity. Geometric paths reflect the order of monastic life, guiding visitors through orchards, medicinal herbs, aromatic plants and seasonal crops. More than 2,500 plant species create a layered green sanctuary overlooking the Venetian lagoon. At its heart, a reflective water basin with water lilies and lotus flowers offers a quiet focal point for contemplation.
The site also includes restored ancient workshops, a greenhouse, meditation chapels and a small apiary, reconnecting visitors with the agricultural and spiritual traditions that once shaped daily life here. The experience is immersive, peaceful and surprisingly intimate — a rare green escape away from the city’s busiest routes.
