San Servolo Insane Asylum Museum · Venice
Located on the quiet island of San Servolo, just a short boat ride from St. Mark’s Square, this museum offers a unique insight into the history of mental health care in Venice. Once a functioning psychiatric hospital from the 18th to the 20th century, it preserves documents, medical instruments, photographs, and objects created by patients, revealing the daily life inside the asylum.
The visit also includes the historic pharmacy, the anatomical theater, and spaces once used for therapeutic activities, creating a powerful journey into both social and medical history.
