The Historical Regatta (Regata Storica) is one of Venice’s most spectacular and deeply rooted traditions. Every year, on the first Sunday of September, the Grand Canal becomes the stage for a dazzling water parade and a series of thrilling rowing races. The event opens with a majestic historical procession: beautifully decorated boats and costumed figures evoke the splendour of the Serenissima, recalling the welcome once offered to Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, when she renounced her throne in favour of Venice. After the pageant, the competitions begin — with gondolini, pupparini and caorline racing for glory, cheered on by crowds lining the canal. It’s an unforgettable day celebrating skill, history and Venetian pride.
