Lorna Simpson
29 March 2026 – 22 November 2026
Location:
Punta della Dogana
Description:
Punta della Dogana presents a major solo exhibition dedicated to Lorna Simpson, one of the most influential voices in contemporary art. This project marks her most important presentation in Europe in over a decade, with a strong focus on her painting practice. The exhibition brings together around fifty works, including paintings, collages, sculptures, installations and film, offering a broad view of her artistic evolution.
Simpson’s work explores how images are constructed and interpreted, questioning memory, identity and the limits of representation. Her compositions often move between clarity and ambiguity, inviting viewers into uncertain visual spaces where meaning remains open. Over the past years, painting has become central to her research, allowing her to expand themes already present in her earlier photographic work.
The exhibition unfolds through different visual environments: from dense, layered scenes charged with political tension, to atmospheric landscapes inspired by archival imagery, and striking female figures that challenge traditional representations of identity. Collage also plays a key role, revealing the artist’s process of assembling and transforming visual references into new narratives. The result is a rich and immersive experience, where images shift, overlap and continuously evolve.
