Michael Armitage
29 March 2026 – 10 January 2027
Location:
Palazzo Grassi
Description:
Palazzo Grassi presents a major exhibition dedicated to Michael Armitage, a Kenyan artist widely recognized in the contemporary painting scene. The exhibition brings together works from recent years, new productions, and a selection of studies that offer insight into his creative process. His work blends references from history, current events, literature, and visual culture, creating powerful images that move between reality and a dreamlike dimension.
At the core of his practice are complex themes such as social tensions, migration, memory, and power dynamics. His compositions, often layered and open to multiple interpretations, shift between intense and more symbolic moments. Figures move through spaces that feel both real and imagined, building a fluid narrative that invites personal interpretation.
Armitage’s work also stands out for its use of unconventional materials: he paints on bark cloth, a traditional fabric whose natural irregularities directly shape the composition. The result is a rich and distinctive visual language, capable of addressing contemporary issues with both strength and sensitivity.
