Olaf Nicolai
Palazzo Diedo
13 December 2025 – 22 February 2026
Description
During the winter season, Palazzo Diedo hosts Eisfeld II, an immersive installation by Olaf Nicolai that places ice skating at the very centre of the experience. Inside the palace’s elegant frescoed ballroom, a real ice rink becomes an unexpected stage where visitors are invited to put on skates and glide across the ice within a historic Venetian interior.
The 100-square-metre rink creates a striking contrast between the cold, luminous surface of the ice and the warmth of the baroque architecture. As visitors skate, their movements are accompanied by a custom sound environment that enhances rhythm and motion, turning every step, curve and pause into part of the artwork itself. Skating here is not just recreational: it is a physical and sensory way of engaging with contemporary art.
Two illuminated panels positioned at either end of the rink frame the space and suggest a subtle reflection on balance, enjoyment and endurance. Eisfeld II transforms the simple act of skating on ice into a shared, atmospheric experience, where art is lived through movement and participation.
